  • Biography/Historical Note

The Snavely lineage is part of Milton S. Hershey=s maternal ancestry. It is believed the Snavely family emigrated from Switzerland sometime between 1707 and 1718. Milton S. Hershey=s mother, Veronica (Fanny) Buckwalter Snavely, married Henry H. Hershey on January 15, 1856. Fanny, born September 4, 1835, was the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Buckwalter Snavely of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Snavelys were wealthy landowners in Lancaster County. Milton S. Hershey depended on the assistance of his maternal aunt Martha (Mattie) and uncle Abraham B. Snavely for support in operating a confectionery shop in Philadelphia from 1876 to 1882.
